Although we felt Virgin’s online bingo had an initially shaky debut - mostly due to incomplete customer information and an unfinished feel to the site layout rather than poor game quality - a thorough revamp has really raised their game, elevating this online bingo hall into the premier league of UK online bingo sites.
Play Virgin Bingo and you’re hooking into the mighty St. Minver network (which also provides the ‘engine room’ of Yahoo! Bingo and Gala Online Bingo) giving you access to one of the biggest bingo beanos on the net. Now, while we know that size isn’t everything, it can’t be ignored that the cumulative effect of having so many players on this network means that the progressive jackpots on offer here can be simply HUGE. How so? Well, a percentage of all the money played through the daily bingo games is added to the jackpot, so the more cards being played the bigger the jackpot – since there are so many players on the entire network the progressive jackpots don’t often take long to get life-changingly large! Although you may be playing through the Virgin site, you are getting to play for jackpots accumulating through players having their fun in two other big name online bingo halls. Neat huh?

One thing to bear in mind though is that whilst the progressive jackpots are undoubtedly fantastic, the vast community of players online who are helping to generate such impressive jackpots are also playing to win them too, so these big jackpots also mean lots of online bingo fiends in competition with you. That said, it’s worth remembering that the thrifty minimum costs for a card, means you’re not obliged to commit a huge ante to be in with a chance to pocket these prizes.
Turning to look and feel, we really like the clean, bright layout of Virgin’s site and the presentation of the non-download games is lovely – if classic 90 ball bingo is the bingo bag you’re into then you are not going to be disappointed here. If you are also dipping your toe into the online bingo waters for the first time this site should also go straight on your shortlist as Virgin have clearly put some thought into helping nervous newbies find their feet – as already mentioned, the revamp has cured all the ills of the debut site. Support and player information is now excellent and the hard-won reputation of Virgin as a trusted brand helps reinforce the feeling that you’re in safe hands here.

Naturally (wo)man cannot live by online bingo alone, so there’s a nice selection of onsite minigames on offer, to keep players entertained during the short breaks between the scheduled games (or even during games if you’re a hyperactive, multi-tasking online bingo buff!) Better still, in our opinion, is the lively real-time chat, beautifully integrated into the main game playing screen, which gives the online experience that sociable spin so crucial to recreating the fun of real world bingo. There are a number of rooms to choose from, and on our regular visits during this review we never found ourselves stood alone like a Billy-No-Mates in an empty room wondering if we smell (!) We also must give an unqualified thumbs up to Virgin for their Chat Games which are a great way of getting to know fellow players, participating in team competitions and earning special bonuses.
To join in the action at Virgin Bingo is supremely straightforward, following an uncomplicated registration process. We did find that the delay while our membership was processed after submission was not going to win any speed records, but whilst we had time to twiddle our thumbs it wasn’t time enough to complete a thousand-piece jigsaw either! A minor niggle we know, but it would be nice to have a more informative, onscreen indication that something is happening and that your computer hasn’t decided to have a funny turn...

Whilst we’re having a little whinge we think it’s worth pointing out that you might have a few issues if you want to play Virgin Bingo and you use an Apple Mac computer. Perhaps the most serious flaw is that, try as we might we simply couldn’t get the games console to load when using Apple’s default web browser, Safari. Thankfully switching to Internet Explorer 5 got us into the games and daubing cards like it was going out of fashion, but even then we found some of the main site layout could get a bit squiffy. Whilst these occasional layout problems under IE5 didn’t affect the core business of getting busy with the bingo it was nonetheless a bit disappointing.
Mac related whinges aside, we think Virgin Bingo is a very impressive site, and with a minimum card price of 10p, and Virgin putting £1 into every new players account as a deposit free welcome bonus, what more reason do you need to head on over, buy a few cards on the house and try out their 90 ball bingo for yourself? Whether you already play online bingo, or are an online bingo virgin, Virgin Bingo is a ‘great call’.
